Who Is The First Chinese Athlete To Compete In The Olympics? Liu Chang Chun
Liu Hong Liang (left), son of Liu Chang Chun, the first Chinese athlete to take part in the Olympics. Xu Hai Feng (right), the first Chinese Olympic gold medalist.

Liu Chang Chun was the first and only Chinese athlete who took part in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics and Xu Hai Feng is the first Chinese Olympian to bag China a gold medal at Los Angeles in 1984.

Liu Hong Liang was 17 days old when his father (Liu Chang Chun) set sail from Shanghai to compete in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics as the first and only Chinese athlete.

鈥淗e had no idea where is America,鈥 Liu said.

Liu Chang Chun competed in the 100- and 200-meter sprints after carrying China鈥檚 flag by himself in the opening ceremonies. He did not medal in either event. It would be another 52 years until China won its first Olympic gold, when the 1984 Summer Games were in Los Angeles.

Over here at Beijing Olympics FAN!, we aim to educate our readers (and ourselves) on the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the history of the Olympics. We just want you to get to know more about the history of the Games before the grand event on 8th August. We start off by asking ourselves,”When was the first Olympics and what year?”

The first Olmypics or the first ancient Olympic Games was held in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC. The Games quickly gained importance in ancient Greece and only young naked men were allowed to participate. Wooh, sexy.

The first modern International Olympic Games was held in Athens, capital of Greece, in 1896. 108 years later, the 2004 Summer Olympic Games was held there again with a much bigger bang.
