Philip Craven, IPC (International Paralympic Committee) head honcho, was impressed with the Paralympic Games preparations which Beijing has made. He felt like “over the moon” as the Olympic city was transformed into a Paralympic city in just days after the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics.

“The Paralympic Village is just fantastic. We’ve got the very best accommodation, the very best food, good transport.”

Craven was also content with the fact that China had been doing its best to fulfill its promise of making the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games equally splendid.

“The airport is very important for the people who use wheelchairs and what’s been put in place at the Capital Airport is state-of-the-art,” he said. “In fact the BOCOG has devised certain procedures that we have never seen before. That means when you get off the plane, very quickly after the plane arrives, your chair is waiting for you there. That’s one example.”

Australia Sending 170 Athletes To Compete For 472 Medals In Beijing Paralympics

Australia will be sending 170 disabled athletes for the Beijing Paralympics 2008 on Monday.

A total of 472 medals are up for grabs in the Paralympic Games which will commence on the 6th of September 2008, this Saturday.

Sport Minister Kate Ellis said Australian Paralympians had collected 908 medals from Paralympic competition in the past 48 years.

“This is the largest ever Paralympic team to compete overseas and I am greatly looking forward to celebrating their success in Beijing,” Ms Ellis said.

“Every Australian state and territory will be represented.”
